Sneako’s Creativity Kit- How to Get your First 1k (Pt. 1)
The following is taken from Sneako’s Creativity Kit Course, Episode 1- Unleashing Creativity. You can read for free.
The first 1k subscribers/followers is often the hardest part
The hardest part is getting used to talking in front of a camera
The most important thing to learn when you’re talking to a camera is to not care so much
A lot of people’s first videos sound like class presentations in school
Social media is supposed to be funny and entertaining, if you sound like you’re in school people will immediately not want to watch it
If you weren’t you, would you watch your videos? Be honest with yourself
It’s not easy to figure out how to be entertaining to other people, but the first step is developing the mindset of your viewer and ask yourself if you would like the content if you were the viewer
Learning how to get comfortable with social media and recording yourself is an important step, it’s okay if your first videos aren’t very good
You need to develop what is essentially a different version of social skills- ie. through the keyboard/camera/internet, not in person
Many people want everything to happen too quickly, it’s going to take some time in the beginning to figure out what to do and what does and doesn’t work
When you’re first starting off, just do it for fun and don’t have high expectations (at first) because it’s a whole new skill you need to develop
Stand-up comedians say you have to do it for sometimes up to 10 years just to be funny on stage
They don’t just get on stage and be funny the first time; they get on stage for the first time and sweat, stumble, panic, make mistakes because it’s hard
You have to literally study social media like it’s homework- it cannot be something you just use for entertainment anymore. If you just go on tiktok and scroll, you’re falling behind
You will also develop introspection and self-awareness, because as soon as you start getting any significant exposure, you will immediately get comments
Then you will have two choices, either- see the hate comments and write a long essay replying to them to prove they’re wrong and you’re perfect, or see the comments and think about it and use it to develop if it’s useful criticism or just ignore it if it isn’t useful
A lot of people simply care too much what other people think and say, they put up a barrier in front of what they really think because they’re concerned about getting criticised
You have to be okay with someone seeing your content and disagreeing with you, or not liking you
Growth can be exponential- once you figure out how to get that first 1k followers/subscribers, it will be much easier going forwards
When you first start out there are a lot of things you don’t know- clickbait, proper titles, good thumbnails, editing, keeping attention, etc. It takes some time to figure these things out but the more you study social media and the more you create and post online, the faster you will learn
